FILTRATION – FLAGSHIP PRODUCT

Automatic Valveless
Gravity Filter

A media filter that backwashes itself on head-loss alone. No pumps, no valves, no controllers, no operator — and no electricity.

THE PRINCIPLE

AUTO VALVELESS
GRAVITY FILTER

The AVGF is a three-chamber gravity filter: filter bed, filtrate collection, and integral backwash storage. Raw water enters by gravity and passes down through the media. Filtrate rises into the backwash storage chamber above.

As the bed loads with solids, head loss rises and the water level in the inlet leg climbs. At a preset level the siphon primes automatically and the stored filtrate reverses through the bed at high rate, flushing it clean. The siphon breaks, and filtration resumes.

No Panel, no pump, no valve, no operator. The filter simply cannot forget to backwash.

OPERATING CYCLE

FOUR STAGES, FULLY AUTOMATIC

FILTRATION

Raw water flows down through the media bed by gravity. Filtrate passes up into the backwash storage chamber.

HEAD LOSS BUILDS

Solids accumulate. Resistance rises and water level in the inlet leg climbs steadily.

SIPHON PRIMES

At the trigger level the siphon self-primes. Stored filtrate reverses through the bed at backwash velocity.

SIPHON BREAKS

Backwash storage empties to the break point, siphon breaks, and filtration restarts. Cycle repeats indefinitely.

Banked cells running unattended across large plant duty — every unit back-washing itself on head loss alone.

TECHNOLOGY COMPARISON

GRAVITY VS. PRESSURE FILTRATION

Both are proven technologies, and each suits different duties. Pressure filters are the right answer where line pressure must be maintained or space is tight. This table sets out where the valveless gravity approach differs, so your engineering team can judge the fit.

Parameter Valveless gravity (AVGF) Pressure filtration
Backwash initiation Automatic, on head loss Timer, DP switch or manual
Backwash pump Not required Typically required
Valves None Actuated valve set
Control system Not required PLC or timer panel
Power for filter operation Not required Required
Routine operator input Not required Periodic
Moving parts None Valves, actuators, pumps
Backwash water source Integral stored filtrate System or dedicated tank
Operating pressure Gravity head Pressurised
Vessel type Open tank Pressure vessel
Downstream pressure Re-pumping needed if required Line pressure maintained
Footprint Larger plan area Compact
Maintenance scope Media top-up Valves, actuators, pumps, media
Spares holding Minimal Valve and actuator spares
Running cost Minimal Pump power and maintenance

CHOOSING BETWEEN THEM

Pressure filtration is generally the better fit where downstream line pressure must be retained, where plan area is restricted, or where the filter sits within an existing pressurised circuit. Valveless gravity filtration tends to suit continuous side-stream duty, sites without reliable power at the filter, and installations where minimal operator attention is the priority. We are happy to advise honestly on which suits your application — including when it is not ours.

AVGF BANK IN SERVICE

BANKED OPERATION

NINE FILTERS AT A
WATER TREATMENT PLANT

Cells share common inlet and outlet mains. Backwash is naturally staggered — each cell trips on its own head loss — so filtration never stops across the bank.

No sequencing logic
No cross-connection

SELECTION

SIZING & CONFIGURATION

Stand-alone units cover 10–500 m³/hr. Above that, twin-bed and multi-cell arrangements extend capacity to several thousand m³/hr.

STAND-ALONE

Single cell, 10–500 m³/hr. The standard choice for side-stream cooling water and general polishing duty.

TWIN-BED

Two cells sharing common structure for higher flow, with backwash staggered so filtration never stops.

MULTI-CELL

Banked cells for large plant duty. Scales to several thousand m³/hr while retaining valveless operation.

MODULAR BY DESIGN

SIX CELLS,
ONE HEADER

Filtration capacity can be added by additional filter units. Each filter backwashes itself on differential head, and an interlocking arrangement can be provided without panels or PLC.

WHERE IT EARNS ITS KEEP

APPLICATIONS

Both are proven technologies, and each suits different duties. Pressure filters are the right answer where line pressure must be maintained or space is tight. This table sets out where the valveless gravity approach differs, so your engineering team can judge the fit.

COOLING TOWER SIDE-STREAM

The primary application. Continuous side-stream filtration removes suspended solids from recirculating cooling water, letting you run a higher Cycle of Concentration — which cuts blowdown, make-up water and chemical dosing. Fouling, scaling and under-deposit corrosion all fall.

RAW & SURFACE WATER

Clarified river, canal or reservoir water polished ahead of process use or potable treatment. Gravity operation suits sites where a filter has to run unattended with no reliable power.

EFFLUENT POLISHING

Final TSS removal after secondary or tertiary treatment, ahead of discharge or recycling into a ZLD scheme.
